Q&A WITH REBECCA BIRKELUND

How long have you worked in accounting, finance, and/or tech? Recruiting?

10+ years in finance. Aggregate 8 years in executive search.

How were you introduced to the recruiting industry?

I worked at Odgers Berndtson straight out of undergrad.

Why do you look forward to working in accounting, finance or tech talent acquisition?

Whether the focus is on fundraising, strategic planning, or building processes to drive efficiencies and scale, a creative, accountable, and professional finance team is central to a company’s success. I’m looking forward to leveraging my background in both finance and executive search to help clients build the best finance teams in the market.

If you were to provide advice to peers in accounting, finance, or tech seeking to develop their careers, what would it be?

For those members of my peer group who are reasonably well established in their careers, I would recommend individualized advice. However, for those just embarking on a career in finance: get a Big Four CPA; get an MBA and go and work in a large and growing organization with a reputation for leading-edge finance before jumping into a small startup. A solid academic background, access to a talented peer group, and experience of operating at scale will all be key if you want to be able to build a business.

How were you introduced to the DeWinter Group? 

Primary research! I was looking to transition into a larger organization with a focus on Financial Officer retained search. DeWinter Group was on my target list and I cold-called them.

What are 3 words to describe the DeWinter Group (or your impression thus far)?

How do you plan on developing the DeWinter Group? What are your goals for the coming year?

I plan to support Derek and the other partners by transacting searches as quickly and efficiently as possible. It’s a tight market and our clients need high caliber finance professionals to enable them to continue to grow their businesses.

How do you plan on practicing the DeWinter Group’s Mission Statement: ‘We Build Our Network One Relationship at a Time’?

I hope to spend a significant portion of my time meeting financial officers and soon-to-be financial officers. Creativity in recruiting is key and at the executive level, it isn’t just about checking all the boxes. Creativity is only possible when a recruiter really takes the time to get to know a candidate.

What’s your favorite thing to do in the Bay Area/Silicon Valley?

I love watching my kids play soccer, which is fortunate because that’s what I spend most of my time doing.

What did you originally want to be when you grew up?

An Egyptologist or a can-can dancer.

What’s your favorite ’90s jam?

I Want it That Way by Backstreet Boys. It’s a road trip classic and should always be sung with minimal regard to the actual tune and at maximum volume.
