Job Description: Controller (Hybrid – San Francisco, CA)

The Opportunity

Our client is a high-growth, venture-backed technology company sitting at the unique intersection of biotech and artificial intelligence . Their mission is to revolutionize clinical development by utilizing advanced machine learning and digital modeling to accelerate the delivery of life-saving treatments to patients.

Following a successful major mid-stage funding round from premier global investors, our client is scaling their operations and seeking a sophisticated accounting leader to join their team during this period of rapid expansion.

The Role

We are seeking a hands-on Controller to serve as a critical individual contributor. In this role, you will be responsible for the architecture and execution of all core accounting operations, systems, and compliance.

Reporting directly to the CFO , you will manage everything from high-level technical revenue recognition to day-to-day payroll and audit readiness. This is a high-impact position designed for a professional who can support strategic scaling, future fundraising diligence, and potential IPO readiness.

Core Responsibilities

Financial Operations & Reporting
  • Lead the monthly close process, journal entries, and financial reporting within NetSuite .

  • Oversee full-cycle AP/AR, including vendor management and customer invoicing.

  • Direct bi-weekly payroll processing and benefits administration.

  • Maintain the integrity of the general ledger and all supporting documentation.

Technical Accounting & Compliance
  • Interpret and apply complex revenue recognition standards ( ASC 606 ) for SaaS and service-based contracts.

  • Review legal agreements (MSAs, licensing) to identify and mitigate financial implications.

  • Act as the primary point of contact for external auditors and coordinate annual audit schedules.

  • Ensure strict adherence to GAAP, tax regulations, and evolving filing requirements.

Strategic Support & Systems
  • Prepare comprehensive data rooms and financial schedules for future investment rounds (Series D+) or public market readiness.

  • Partner with the FP&A lead on budget-to-actual variance analysis and executive reporting.

  • Optimize and automate financial systems, including NetSuite workflows and integrations with CRM and HRIS platforms.

  • Establish SOX-compliant internal controls and process documentation as the organization matures.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience: 8–12 years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years in a senior leadership role (Controller or Director of Accounting).

  • Pedigree: A Big 4 audit background is strongly preferred, specifically with clients in the technology or life sciences sectors.

  • Industry Hybrid: Proven experience managing accounting for both Software/SaaS (recurring revenue) and Biotech/R&D environments.

  • Credentials: CPA required (active or inactive).

  • Technical Mastery: Deep fluency in ASC 606, 842, and 718.

  • Systems: Advanced proficiency in NetSuite (administrator level preferred) and experience with close-management software (e.g., FloQast).

Personal Profile

Our client is looking for a "player-coach" mentality—someone who is detail-obsessed and technically rigorous, but also an adaptable problem-solver who can translate complex accounting issues for non-finance stakeholders.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Competitive salary and significant equity participation .

  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision (100% employer-covered).

  • 401k with company match and flexible PTO.

  • Dedicated year-end company-wide break.
