Design Engineer, Parking Technology Solutions
Overview
Design site-specific parking and mobility technology solutions that connect real-world infrastructure with integrated access, revenue, guidance, payment, security, and analytics systems. As the technical bridge between client needs and buildable field solutions, you will translate discovery findings, product capabilities, physical site conditions, and applicable codes into accurate drawings, models, network diagrams, and installation-ready documentation.
This client- and contractor-facing role partners with Sales, Quoting, Operations, and installation teams throughout the project lifecycle—from initial discovery and technical feasibility through design acceptance, handoff, and delivery. Your work will help ensure solutions are practical, code-conscious, clearly documented, and ready to build with minimal rework.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop site-specific designs for parking access and revenue control, parking guidance, payment, security, and related technology systems.
- Produce accurate 2D layouts and 3D models showing equipment placement, lane configurations, sightlines, clearances, cable and conduit routing, and sensor coverage.
- Perform turn-radius analysis, clearance checks, and other technical studies as required.
- Review designs against physical and structural conditions, municipal requirements, accessibility standards, fire and life-safety considerations, and local ordinances.
- Create basic site network diagrams for field devices such as license plate recognition cameras, security cameras, gates, barriers, and payment kiosks.
- Apply consistent IP addressing and naming conventions while identifying potential address conflicts across typical site networks of approximately 4–15 devices.
- Collaborate with Sales to shape solutions around client objectives and site requirements.
- Support quoting and estimating with itemized equipment, material, and installation-scope breakdowns.
- Lead technical discussions with clients and representatives, present proposed drawings, answer questions, and manage revisions through acceptance.
- Present accepted designs to installation contractors and confirm scope, methodology, and sequencing before work begins.
- Support Operations and contractors with design-related questions during project delivery.
- Maintain complete, organized design records from discovery and site data through final client-accepted drawings.
- Develop and maintain standardized drawing templates, material requirements, and bills of materials.
- Contribute to related deliverables such as safety management plans, traffic and turn-radius studies, signage, and wayfinding drawings.
- Capture lessons learned and recurring site issues to improve design standards and reduce rework.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- At least 3–5 years of experience producing technical or engineering drawings for physical installations, such as parking, security and access control, low-voltage systems, civil/site works, or a related technical design field.
- Ability to work independently on client-facing design decisions.
- Proficiency with a major CAD platform; AutoCAD experience is required.
- Ability to create and navigate 3D models using SketchUp, Revit, or a similar tool.
- Working knowledge of civil engineering standards and site-drawing conventions, including clearances, accessibility, grading, striping, and signage.
- Experience using Bluebeam Revu or an equivalent tool for markups, redlines, and drawing reviews.
- Working knowledge of local network fundamentals, including:
- IP addressing and subnetting
- Static IP assignment
- Basic switch and Power over Ethernet topology
- Avoiding address conflicts
- Diagramming self-contained site networks
- Strong understanding of file organization, naming conventions, revision control, and project archiving.
- Ability to interpret and reconcile client requirements, sales commitments, municipal codes, and product capabilities.
- Strong written, verbal, presentation, and technical communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent designs across discovery, development, review, acceptance, and delivery.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365.
- Willingness to collaborate across time zones with distributed Sales, Operations, and design teams.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Experience with parking access and revenue control systems, parking guidance, license plate recognition, gate and barrier hardware, or LiDAR-based sensing systems.
- Experience designing for multiple jurisdictions with varying local codes and requirements.
- Familiarity with ADA/accessibility standards.
- Experience with traffic or turn-radius analysis tools such as AutoTURN.
- Background in structured low-voltage, access control, CCTV, or related security-system design.
- Working knowledge of Civil 3D, Revit, or MicroStation.
- Experience with Salesforce or quoting- and customer relationship management tools.
- Autodesk Certified Professional/User certification or a comparable vendor credential.
- Genuine interest in parking, mobility, physical-security, or related technology solutions.
Preferred Education and Experience
- An associate or bachelor’s degree in drafting/CAD, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, construction-related engineering, or a similar discipline is preferred.
- Equivalent hands-on experience may be considered in place of a degree.
- Three to five or more years of relevant technical design experience is preferred, with demonstrated involvement in projects from discovery or site input through accepted, issued design.
- Experience working directly with clients and contractors on technical drawings is strongly preferred over purely back-office drafting experience.
Other Requirements
- Work arrangement: United States-based position; the specific onsite, hybrid, or remote arrangement will depend on the assigned posting location.
- Travel: Periodic domestic travel is required for client discovery meetings, design reviews, site coordination, and contractor pre-installation meetings. Travel frequency will vary based on project needs.
- Must be comfortable presenting designs to clients and contractors and coordinating with contractors onsite.
- A portfolio of 2D drawings and 3D models is required, demonstrating accurate dimensioning, clash-checked layouts, and designs used for actual construction or installation.
- Portfolio materials should demonstrate end-to-end involvement in at least one project, from discovery or site input through accepted and issued design.
