Job Title:  Director of Investment Operations
Job Type:  Direct-Hire
Location:  San Francisco, CA - Hybrid (2 days/week on-site, 5:30 a.m. PST start)
Target Start Date: ASAP

About the Opportunity:

Our client, a prominent Investment Management Firm, is seeking a skilled Director of Investment Operations to ensure the operational success of their Direct Indexing business, Active Index Advisors (AIA), along with multi-discipline and affiliate product lines. This includes driving efficiency, upholding high service levels, embedding risk controls, achieving client satisfaction, and optimizing resources. This pivotal role involves partnering with senior leadership to align strategic goals with operational priorities. This is a high-impact role that requires a self-motivated professional who can hit the ground running and deliver results quickly. Relocation assistance is available.

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables:

This role is focused on the successful completion of specific tasks and deliverables. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and improving operational success for Direct Indexing and other product lines, including client service, operations, performance, and vendor relationships.
  • Leading the vendor oversight program for outsourced services, ensuring compliance and optimizing performance with key partners.
  • Evaluating and enhancing workflow processes, systems, and technology architecture to improve efficiency, reduce risk, and increase scalability.
  • Collaborating with the investment team to align operational structure and processes with investment objectives.
  • Working closely with the Technology team to drive technology strategy for greater operational efficiency and scalability.
  • Partnering with internal business stakeholders (finance, sales/relationship management, leadership, portfolio management, trading, human resources) to execute operational strategy.
  • Navigating market volatility through contingency planning, risk management, and operational resilience.
  • Enhancing the client experience by refining back-office processes, workflows, and communication.
  • Managing and developing a highly skilled team, including two direct reports, contributing to overall team effectiveness.
Required Skills & Experience:

We are looking for someone with a proven track record of successful leadership in operations within the financial services industry. The ideal candidate will have:
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in operations management, preferably within the financial services industry with a focus on tax-advantaged/efficient investment strategies and SMAs.
  • Extensive experience with Direct Indexing as opposed to mutual funds. This isn't a learning role—you need to be a subject matter expert.
  • Established track record of leading and developing operational teams to achieve high levels of efficiency, performance, and scale.
  • Strong understanding of operational risk management and experience in implementing risk controls.
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills to collaborate at all levels of an organization.
  • Experience in vendor management and oversight, compliance, and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on continuous improvement, innovation, and risk management.
  • Exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to articulate complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to work proactively, identify opportunities for improvement, and integrate different third-party tools and systems.
  • Commitment to enhancing the client experience through refined back-office processes and engagement strategies.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Operations Management, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
