Pay Range: $180,000 – $220,000/year
Start Date: TBD
Location: Remote (East Coast preference required; requires occasional travel to Boston)
About the Opportunity:
Our client, a mission-driven leader in the Education Technology space, is looking for a strategic and people-focused Engineering Manager to lead their CloudOps, Platform, and DevEx team. You will guide a high-performing team in building the future of internal platforms, focusing on developer experience, reliability, and modernization. This is a leadership position designed for a seasoned engineering leader who can mentor teams, navigate ambiguity, and shape the strategic direction of platform infrastructure while championing a culture of enablement rather than gatekeeping.
Key Responsibilities & Deliverables:
This role is focused on the successful completion of specific tasks and deliverables. Your responsibilities will include:
- Team Leadership & Growth: Lead and grow the CloudOps (Platform & DevEx) team, providing clarity, coaching, mentorship, and a strong sense of purpose.
- Define the Platform Strategy: Build and evolve "paved paths" for service creation, deployment, observability, and operations—defining the standardized "way" to build software.
- Modernization Leadership: Drive the modernization of legacy infrastructure, helping the team shift from manual maintenance patterns to scalable, reliable, and well-automated infrastructure.
- Developer Experience (DevEx): Partner with product engineering teams to understand friction, remove obstacles, and co-create better workflows and internal tooling; define and measure DevEx outcomes (e.g., using SPACE metrics).
- Operational Stewardship: Manage vendor relationships, infrastructure costs, and resource planning for all platform surface areas.
- Strategic Collaboration: Collaborate with Security on guardrails and secure defaults while ensuring CloudOps remains an enablement-focused team.
We are looking for someone with a proven track record of successful engineering leadership. The ideal candidate will have:
- 8+ years of engineering experience, with a minimum of 3+ years leading platform, cloud infrastructure, SRE, or DevOps teams.
- Strong experience with AWS (compute, networking, IAM, storage, databases) and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform, CloudFormation, or CDK).
- Experience designing and operating CI/CD pipelines and secure deployment workflows (GitHub Actions, OIDC).
- Familiarity with modern observability practices (metrics, logs, traces; OpenTelemetry, CloudWatch, Datadog, or Grafana).
- Practical knowledge of containerized applications (Docker, ECS/EKS) and developer workflows on Mac/Linux.
- A track record of building strong teams, mentoring engineers, and leading through ambiguity and organizational change.
- Hands-on understanding of balancing security, reliability, and developer experience through guardrails and risk-based tradeoffs.
- Curiosity regarding how AI can enhance developer workflows, observability, and tooling.
