Project Accountant – Construction Industry
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Project Accountant to support the financial management of large-scale construction projects. This role will be responsible for monitoring project costs, maintaining accurate job cost reporting, supporting accounts payable and accounts receivable functions, and partnering closely with project managers and operations teams to ensure financial visibility throughout the project lifecycle.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, thrives in a fast-paced construction environment, and has a strong understanding of project accounting and job costing principles.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and analyze project job cost records to ensure accurate allocation of labor, materials, subcontractor costs, and overhead expenses.
- Monitor project budgets, commitments, change orders, and cost-to-complete reporting.
- Prepare and distribute project financial reports for project managers and leadership.
- Review and process subcontractor invoices, vendor invoices, and employee expense reimbursements.
- Assist with accounts payable processing, including invoice coding, approvals, and payment tracking.
- Support accounts receivable activities, including progress billings, customer invoicing, collections, and cash application.
- Reconcile project-related accounts and investigate discrepancies.
- Track contract values, retainage, and change orders to ensure accurate project financial reporting.
- Assist with month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries and account reconciliations.
- Collaborate with project teams to identify financial risks and opportunities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and contract requirements.
- Support audit requests and provide project accounting documentation as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred.
- 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably within the construction, engineering, or project-based industry.
- Strong understanding of job costing, project accounting, and construction accounting principles.
- Experience supporting both Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial reporting.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously.
- Experience working on large-scale construction projects.
- Experience with ERP implementations, system conversions, or accounting software migrations.
- Experience with Sage Intacct and/or Sage 100.
- Familiarity with contract accounting, progress billing, retainage, and change order management.
- Experience working closely with project managers, operations teams, and field personnel.
- Accurate and timely project cost reporting.
- Strong visibility into project financial performance and budget tracking.
- Efficient processing of AP and AR transactions.
- Effective partnership with project management teams.
- Successful support of ERP implementation and process improvement initiatives.
