Position Overview
Our client, a Lutheran Church, is seeking an experienced Accounting & Finance Consultant to oversee the church's financial operations and serve as a trusted advisor to church leadership. This individual will be responsible for the day-to-day accounting functions, financial reporting, payroll administration, fund accounting, compliance requirements, and financial oversight of the organization.
The ideal candidate will be highly proficient in QuickBooks Online, possess a strong understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and have experience managing the accounting needs of a nonprofit, religious organization, or small corporation. This position requires the ability to work independently while collaborating with church leadership, the Finance Committee, and volunteers.
The successful candidate must be comfortable working within a faith-based organization that is welcoming and affirming of the LGBTQ+ community.
Key Responsibilities
Accounting & Financial Operations
- Process accounts payable and prepare checks in QuickBooks Online for Treasurer approval and signature.
- Process donations and collaborate with church volunteers to ensure accurate donor reporting and contribution tracking.
- Process payroll through QuickBooks Online Full-Service Payroll.
- Prepare and distribute monthly financial statements.
- Reconcile monthly bank statements and quarterly investment account statements.
- Maintain accurate general ledger records in accordance with GAAP.
- Manage fund accounting activities, including monitoring fund balances and allocating income and expenses appropriately.
- Maintain and update fixed asset and depreciation schedules.
- Partner with the Finance Committee to develop and prepare the annual operating budget.
- Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support sound fiscal management.
- Advise the Treasurer and Pastor on financial policies, procedures, and accounting best practices.
- Attend annual HR compliance training and collaborate with the Personnel Committee to ensure compliance with requirements applicable to a 501(c)(3) organization.
- Prepare and file required legal and business reports, including but not limited to Form 571-L, Statements of Information, and other regulatory filings as required.
- Coordinate payroll audits and provide supporting documentation for insurance carriers and other third parties.
- Assist the Finance Committee with the annual financial audit or review process.
- Coordinate with the church's insurance provider during annual policy renewals and provide required financial information.
- Advanced proficiency in QuickBooks Online, including QuickBooks Online Full-Service Payroll.
- Thorough understanding of GAAP accounting principles and financial reporting.
- Experience managing the accounting operations of a nonprofit organization, church, or small business.
- Strong knowledge of balance sheet reconciliations, general ledger maintenance, and financial statement preparation.
- Experience with fund accounting strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound professional judgment.
- Experience working with churches, religious organizations, or other nonprofit entities.
- Familiarity with 501(c)(3) compliance requirements and nonprofit governance.
- Experience supporting audits, insurance renewals, and regulatory filings.
