Start Date:  ASAP
Location:  Westbrook, ME (Hybrid 2x per week)

About the Opportunity:

Our client, a leader in the diagnostics and healthcare technology industry, is looking for a skilled Senior Software Engineer  to join their team for a 6+ month engagement. This project involves shaping the platform powering their diagnostic data services, specifically focusing on building and maintaining the APIs that deliver reliable, performant data to internal teams and external partners. This is a high-impact role that requires a self-motivated professional who can hit the ground running, design robust systems, and deliver results quickly in a collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables:

This role is focused on the successful completion of specific tasks and deliverables. Your responsibilities will include:
  • API Design & Development: Design, build, test, debug, and document production-grade software (APIs) based on technical configurations, ensuring reliable and performant data delivery.
  • Full-Lifecycle Ownership: Partner with analysts, product managers, and other engineers to translate business needs into scalable systems, managing projects from design through deployment and ongoing support.
  • Cloud Infrastructure: Leverage cloud service providers (AWS/GCP) to run and observe API workloads, ensuring high availability and operational efficiency.
  • System Maintenance: Support, update, and maintain existing systems in response to business needs, defects, and evolving requirements.
  • Architecture & Mentorship: Contribute to system architecture decisions and help shape team-wide engineering practices through collaboration and code reviews.
Required Skills & Experience:

We are looking for someone with a proven track record of successful contract engagements. The ideal candidate will have:
  • 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a track record of shipping and maintaining production systems.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and Spring Boot, and/or Node.js with TypeScript, with hands-on experience building and operating production-grade RESTful APIs.
  • Solid understanding of both relational (SQL) and NoSQL databases, including schema design, query tuning, and data modeling.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (AWS or GCP) and modern engineering practices (Git, CI/CD, automated testing, and incremental delivery).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • A collaborative mindset with a strong sense of ownership and a desire to take problems to completion.
Nice to Have:  Experience with event-driven architectures (Kafka, Pub/Sub), containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), or infrastructure-as-code (Terraform).
